According to VDM Law’s Ann-Suhet Marx, illegal tactics—such as cutting off utilities or hiring unregulated eviction services—are not only unlawful but often backfire, resulting in costly remedial action. A recent Sandton case saw damages escalate to R150,000 after a tenant retaliated violently during a forced eviction. Marx urges property owners to pursue legal channels from the outset, ideally through the High Court, to avoid financial and emotional fallout.
